ऊर्जा मन्त्री श्रेष्ठद्वारा कुलेखानी जलविद्युत् ड्यामको निरीक्षण, बाँध जोखिममुक्त

Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has inspected the Kulekhani Hydropower Project Dam in Makawanpur.

Minister Shrestha had reached Kulekhani Dam on Saturday to assess the condition of the dam, which had crossed the danger level due to heavy rains during the last 24-26 October. Minister Shrestha was briefed on the situation by Nepal Electricity Authority Executive Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha and the authority’s staff.

Minister Shrestha said that the Kulekhani Dam is safe and the situation is normal. He said that high surveillance was maintained at the dam during heavy rains and all strategies were adopted. 

“The incessant rains a few days ago damaged various hydropower projects and transmission infrastructure in the country, and the water level in the Kulekhani Dam also reached the alert level, raising concerns about potential risks. It also created some pressure on power supply management. It also affected the Kulekhani Hydropower Station, which serves as the ‘backup’ of Nepal’s electricity system,” he said. 

Executive Director of the Electricity Authority, Dirghayu Shrestha, said that Kulekhani is the backbone of the power system. It also plays an important role in peaking the system, he said, adding, “It has been a major contribution from the point of view of system operation.” MD Shrestha said that the condition of the dam is normal.
