Farmers in Maitighar Mandal, Kathmandu, protested by throwing tomatoes on the road on Wednesday morning, saying they were not getting a fair price for their tomatoes.
Minister for Agriculture, Forest and Environment Geeta Chaudhary invited the farmers, who were protesting to the ministry, to discuss the issue of ensuring fair prices for their produce, making market management effective, and protecting the interests of farmers.
During the discussion, farmers expressed the view that the government’s effective role is necessary to ensure fair prices for tomatoes, easy market access and reduce the influence of middlemen. Minister Chaudhary stated that the ministry is serious about the legitimate demands of farmers and has given necessary instructions to the concerned bodies to immediately streamline the market management and supply system.
The transportation of tomatoes outside the Kathmandu Valley from Kalimati has begun on Wednesday under the initiative of the ministry and in coordination with the Kalimati Fruit and Vegetable Market. The ministry has stated that the transportation was carried out with the aim of creating an environment where farmers can get a fair price for their produce by supplying tomatoes to markets in demand outside the Kathmandu Valley.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Environment has expressed its commitment to further effectively advance market management, supply system strengthening, and market expansion to ensure that farmers’ produce receives a fair market and fair price.
